Question
What is a set top box?

Answer

A set top box enables you to watch digital TV broadcasts on an older analog TV. As it traditionally sits on top of a TV set it has received the name "set top box" however the term can apply to a wide range of devices and not just digital TV decoders.

If you want to keep your existing analog TV, you'll need a set top box to be able to see digital free-to-air TV after the switchover. Set top boxes range from basic Standard Definition (SD) models for satellite reception to High Definition (HD) models and if Freeview approved will have an electronic program guide.

They may have interactive features such as pausing and replaying live TV in higher end equipment such as integrated digital hard disk recorders. You need to assess exactly what your needs are and whether you wish to use Sky's subscription service over the Free to Air options.

CEANZ member companies have Hard Disk recorders with build in Freeview (local) terrestrial tuners progressively available via most mainstream retail outlets. This will provide the ability to link more easily televisions and the peripheral equipment.

Other options for set top boxes include MyFreeview, Sky plus, MySky and non Freeview approved equipment through non traditional sellers.
