Question Answer
Do I have to buy a Freeview set top box to make my old analogue tv work?

No is the short answer. You do have other options:

Unapproved Set Top Boxes
There are other unapproved set top boxes which will work but may not display the same Electronic Programme Guide information that an approved set top box will and may need you to spend some time to set up and maintain.

You need to decide if you can handle doing updates of new channels and software on your set top box yourself before you buy an unapproved set top box as while the price may be cheaper you do need to put some effort in when Freeview adds new channels.

The bonus of unapproved satelite decoders is that you may also receive other channels that are broadcast on the same satelite but are part of the Freeview package such as or Australia's Channel 9. (These are not accessable through an approved set top box) There is however no guarantee that these signals will always be available.

If you are not technically savy or have access to someone who is, then this option is not recommended.

SKY Decoders:
If you have Sky and do not have a second or more televisions in the household you will already be getting a full digital signal. If you have a second TV you may obtain from Sky a second decoder (multi-room) which has an ongoing cost but more channel options. There is no guarantee that a freeview decoder will work at the same time as a sky decoder on the same satellite dish.
Note Sky is a Satellite only option and does not pick up the HD terrestrial (local) digital tv signal and therefore may be subject occassionally to rain fade in adverse weather conditions.

Internet TV

This is newer technology although there is still work to be done to provide stand alone devices that consumer friendly and operate well with most televisions. There are a number of boxes available such as apple and chromecast however they will give differing results and none that yet provide New Zealand specific content such as streaming feeds from New Zealand free to air channels.
Sky as part of their packages provides both an online service for devices and neon to stream a range of channels. Most new Sky decoders will have access to its content on demand.

Approved Freeview devices mostly offer freeview on demand for a range of the channels available on this service.

More and more televisions and associated equipment are coming out with Internet capability however this will vary from supplier to supplier in terms of content and how well this works with an existing channel line ups. App's that are commonly packaged include Skype, Lightbox, Netflix, Youtube and Facebook but many have internet channels available.

Note how well these work will depend greatly on your internet connection and its speeds.
