Question Answer
What will it cost me to get to digital television?
  1. If you have sky or Vodafone and that is your only television - nothing as you already have it.
  2. If you have an integrated digital television and you are in a terrestrial coverage area and this is you only television - nothing as you can already receive it and only need to use the auto tune function of the TV to get it.
  3. If you have a an old analogue tv without Sky or Vodafone and are in a coverage area then you will need a decoder for that TV. If you have purchased a Digital Tuner DVD recorder then this can take the place of a set top box in a terrestrial coverage area. The cost between $80 to $120 on average for a set-top box however shop around to get the best price as occasionaly these have been sold by some retailers for less.
  4. If you have an old analogue tv and are outside of the coverage areas and do not have Sky or Vodafone you will need a satellite decoder and dish. You can use an old Sky dish to connect if you have one and a Freeview approved decoder or a non - freeview decoder from a reputable dealer should be set up to work by just connecting the decoder to the Satellite wall outlet. This will cost between $90 to $300 for most freeview approved decoders although unapproved may be cheaper. You need one for each TV If you have more than one TV you will need to have a splitter installed for each decoder and you will only be able to watch one Satellite at a time. You can DIY this but for a proffesional reception you are recommended to use a good installer for this.
  5. If you do not have a sky dish and are outside of the coverage area then you will also need a satellite dish to be installed and like the number 4 you will need one for each TV. So the advice given for 4 also applies to this situation. This would cost between $200 to $300 for the decoders and around $200 to $300 for the dish from most retailers however you may obtain better prices for dishes and the respective components through alternative outlets like the internet or through a good installer. Shop around on these.
  6. You can purchase some models of television that have dual tuners installed for both satellite and terrestrial which avoids the need for a set-top box but make sure you check with the retailer that this is the case. There should be a clear satellite connection showing on the televisions input if this is the case.
